Menhaden, Mackerel, Herring, and Squid Netting

Mesh size range is generally 1-1/4”” to 1-3/4” (32mm to 44mm) usually with some larger mesh netting next to the leadline.

Though not as time consuming as when building an anchovy net, these still take a lot of time to assemble.

Again, the netting in these fisheries has historically always been tarred nylon netting. I introduced UHMWPE seines to the US herring fishery in 2010, the US squid fishery in 2015, The US menhaden fishery in 2020 (it has been used in menhaden seine bunts for many years previous) . In each area the use of UHMWPE has been successful. These nets also focus on fast sinking and getting over bad ground, whether it be rocks, coral or extremely soft mud, with less danger of damaging the net.
